Experimental Mixed Media - Exploring acrylics with other media
5-week course starting friday, april 24, May 1, 8, 15, & 22
from 10am - 12pm

In this five-week class students will experiment with acrylic paint and other media, such as, conte sticks, ink, pencils/crayons, paint pens and collage. Students will learn how each medium works on its own and experiment with using them with each other. We’ll work abstractly on watercolor and mixed media paper and in a sketchbook. This is a playful class great for anyone who needs to loosen up and have fun!

Note: This is a hands-on painting class, with both classwork and homework.

Open Pottery Studio allows individuals with previous pottery knowledge to freely create new works of art! A studio monitor will be in attendance to answer questions and provide advice, but only minimal instruction is provided. Students receive as much low-fire Gator White clay as they need for $1.00/lb, use of the pottery wheel, slab roller, and all tools and glazes. Students may also bring any low-fire clay, low-fire glazes, and tools, they may want to use. STAA will handle all bisque and glaze firing on site. Firings will take place at the end of the third and fourth weeks of the month, or as needed, so make sure your pieces are bone dry and ready! Any additional firings will be a $15 charge per firing to the student.
Come and go during the offered dates and times as you please! We ask that students that require use of the pottery wheel email maggy@sttammany.art with their required dates to reserve a wheel. All students must clean up after themselves before leaving!

this 3-week class meets friday, may 1, 8, & 15
from 6:00pm to 8:00pm

Students will learn step by step how to throw basic forms on the potter’s wheel. In the first class, students will learn and practice making different vessels that could be wheel thrown such as mugs, bowls, and plates. Students will trim their thrown pieces and then work with stamps and tools to add different textures, designs, and attachments to their work. In the last class students will apply glazes and the instructor will give students a time and date to pick up their fired pieces. Students are asked to bring an old rag or towel to use for clean up!

Join STAA and instructor Robyn Kennedy for a tote bag painting party! The single-night workshop will encourage students to use paints, markers, and stencils, and embellishments to create custom pieces of functional art! Students are asked to bring their own tote bags, but all other supplies are provided. Come and explore painting on an unconventional surface to stretch your creative muscles!

Join us for our new club, the CCC! Each club meeting will offer a brief collage tutorial followed by lots of fun with paper and glue! Feel free to bring any projects or materials you wish to work on. Sharing of ideas, tops, and supportive feedback with the group is encouraged. We will have plenty of ephemera and supplies on hand. All ages welcomed, and experience is not required!

2-week course
Saturday, may 23rd & 30th
from 11:00pm - 1:00pm

Join Angelina for this 2-week course on the potter’s wheel and create a custom set of berry bowls! In your first session, learn the basics of the wheel to throw bowls of different shapes and sizes. In week two, map out your hole designs, cut or bore them out, and glaze your pieces! Bowls will then be fired and students will be notified when they’re ready to be picked up!

Drawing is the foundation of the arts, the basis of all eventual understanding of every form of painting, including abstract, figure, landscape, etc. Drawing classes stress the comprehension of value, proportion and scale.

Bring your own drawing utensils and paper/newsprint or whatever you wish to draw on. This is a laid back group of art enthusiasts that gather to learn from each other and draw. All levels of experience welcome. Adults only; under 18 with parent permission.

This 6-week workshop meets
tuesday, june 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, & july 7
from 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Contemporary Watercolor is a 6-week course exploring the basics of the watercolor medium. The class will go over different technics in handling the medium such as wet on wet and blooming while also investigating art history palettes. This course is meant to teach students the basics of the medium and allow you to develop as an artist based on individuality and not academic standards. Instructor Hart aims to educate and push artists to find themselves in their practice over creating hyper-realism results. At the end of the course, students will walk away with 5 to 6 complete watercolor paintings to take home. This class is open to all levels and instruction of material is flexible per student’s skill level while keeping the whole class working together.

Wednesday, june 3, 10, 17, 24, and july 1 & 8

Beginning Acrylic Painting is a course designed to teach artists the basics of acrylic painting through academic based exercises including glazing, wipe-out, and grisaille. In 6 weeks, artists will paint on paper with acrylic paints. This eliminates the pressure of working on costly surfaces such as canvas while supporting artists to let loose and make big moves in their work. Class will begin with painting in black and white to build a strong foundation for the following weeks. Amber will build still-lifes for the class with spotlights to heightened light and shadows. Amber will collects objects such as vibrant antiques, fruit from her garden, and home objects for the still-life compositions.

A daily watercolor/ink journal can become exactly the kind of gentle structure + creative freedom your brain thrives on. The trick is to build a system that contains your ideas without boxing them in — something that feels like a soft riverbank, not a rigid grid. Together, we will explore gentle watercolor and ink techniques along with creative expression exercises in a way that will support a consistent creative practice. The goal is for journal creation to feel therapeutic, sustainable, and creatively alive. All skill levels welcome!

Class 1 — Foundations of a Gentle Practice
Soft structure, simple warm‑ups, intuitive mark‑making, and letting go of perfection.
Class 2 — Observation & Noticing  
Watercolor + ink techniques for capturing small moments; mindful seeing exercises.
Class 3 — Expression & Visual Language  
Mood‑based color, symbolic marks, layering, and connecting emotion to imagery.

Combining techniques, creating weekly rhythms, and building a sustainable habit.

June 14th: Vintage Mantra Maidens with TT Rouse
Assemble and customize a figure that will provide you with an inspiring goal or quote each day! Use recylced materials and vintage images to bring your maiden to life!

June 21st: Sketching the Face with Meghan Garcia
Join Meghan to learn about the “golden ratios” and “divine proportions” that provide artists with the proper techniques to draw faces! Students will use graphite pencils to begin basic portraiture sketches.

June 28th: Bottle Painting with Robyn Kennedy
Do you think jumping onto a canvas is too big of a commitment? Join Robyn in this workshop and paint on an unconventional surface: Bottles! Students will have a variety of sizes and shapes to choose from, and Robyn will help you create a design and bring it to life!

July 12th: Floral Color Transfers with Janie Dick Papa
Do you want to step up your scrapbooking or collage game? Well, join Janie in this workshop where students will learn how to "pound” flowers in order to create successful color transfers. This technique creates abstract images with infinite design possibilities!

July 19th: “Junk” Journaling with visiting artist Karen Grande
Want to create a custom journal or learn a new collage technique? Join us for this workshop where students learn about the creative opportunities of working with vintage media, specifically children’s books!

July 26th: Macrame Earrings with Ruth Crisp of Knot Ruthlessly
Get tactile in this workshop where students learn basic macrame knots and techniques to create a pair of earrings! Make them short or long, small or large, basic or intricate! All ages welcome!

Does your child want a summer program where they can immerse themselves in visual art?
The Young Artists Studio summer program educates and promotes teen artists in a hands on learning environment through painting, drawing, sculpture, and mixed-media project. Students will create unique projects while also learning professional art techniques and theories. With only 10 spots available, specialized and personal instruction gives students the opportunity to pick their own path as an artist and develop skills to create a diverse portfolio or art for their personal collection.

Everyone’s favorite pottery camp is back! Ceramics instructors, Janie Dick and Angelina Quigley, will explore old and new techniques used throughout history in ceramics with students. Campers will work with clay and use a variety of techniques to create fabulous ceramic pieces. While developing their fine and major motor skills, children will be encouraged to use their imaginations to create functional and sculptural work on the potter’s wheel and through handbuilding techniques.
