Open Pottery Studio allows individuals with previous pottery knowledge to freely create new works of art! A studio monitor will be in attendance to answer questions and provide advice, but only minimal instruction is provided. Students receive as much low-fire Gator White clay as they need for $1.00/lb, use of the pottery wheel, slab roller, and all tools and glazes. Students may also bring any low-fire clay, low-fire glazes, and tools, they may want to use. STAA will handle all bisque and glaze firing on site. Firings will take place at the end of the third and fourth weeks of studio, so make sure your pieces are bone dry and ready! Any additional firings will be a $15 charge per firing to the student.

Students will learn step by step how to throw basic forms on the potter’s wheel. In the first class, students will learn and practice making different vessels that could be wheel thrown such as mugs, bowls, and plates. Students will trim their thrown pieces and then work with stamps and tools to add different textures, designs, and attachments to their work. In the last class students will apply glazes and the instructor will give students a time and date to pick up their fired pieces. Students are asked to bring an old rag or towel to use for clean up!

Want to know why Van Gogh, Cezanne and Monet's paintings are so famous and well loved? Want to make your artwork sing like theirs? In this four week class, instructor Rachel Crawford will let you in on one of their secrets... COLOR! This beginning Color Theory class will explore the theory and history of color through hands-on color mixing and painting. Students will create a variety of color wheels and each week, will create a small painting applying color mixing theory using the various color wheel relationships to learn color harmony, contrast, and value. This class will also cover the principles of design, the elements of art, and the Divine Proportion when planning out the small painting designs.

Henri Matisse said collage is “drawing with scissors”. Join us as we assemble a visual story using the simple tools of scissors, glue, paper, and magazine images. With the aide of prompts to jumpstart the creative process, attendees will explore artistic expression and self-reflection. All skill levels are welcome with as we share in the joy of self-expression, creativity, and community!

Drawing is the foundation of the arts, the basis of all eventual understanding of every form of painting, including abstract, figure, landscape, etc. Drawing classes stress the comprehension of value, proportion and scale.
Bring your own drawing utensils and paper/newsprint or whatever you wish to draw on. This is a laid back group of art enthusiasts that gather to learn from each other and draw. All levels of experience welcome. Adults only; under 18 with parent permission.

Each student will work with their hands to sculpt spooky ghosts for Halloween! Customize your ghosts with carving tools, stamps, attachments, and underglazes to add color. Pieces will then be fired, and students will be given a time to pick up their little friends!
This 3-week COURSE meets Friday, october 10, 17, & 24
from 10am to 1pm
In this three week class students will learn how to paint with gouache. Gouache is a wonderful opaque watercolor paint that has been around for centuries. It is used on paper and dries to a matte finish. You will learn all its various uses, from thick to thinned with water, layering techniques and beyond. Students will work experimentally from imagination and copying 19th century master works.
Note: This is a hands-on painting class, with both classwork and homework.

Grab the girls and your old jean jacket and come down to STAA’s October Girls’ Night Art! Instructor Robyn Kennedy will teach the class painting techniques to give your jean jacket new life! Bring your favorite adult drink, spill the tea with your girls, and get creative! STAA will provide all supplies EXCEPT your jacket.

Want to have a girls night, a date night, or a night of family fun? Join us for a night of wine and pottery!
Join STAA and Angelina Quigley to create your own Charcuterie Board! Students will use the slab roller to create a base for their board. From there, use sculpting and carving techniques to customize your board! Shape dividers and paint food-safe underglaze designs to make each charcuterie board uniquely yours! Boards will then be glossed and and fired in our kiln to be picked up at a later date.

STAA is thrilled to have Zona Wainwright back for her Abstract Mixed-Media Workshop! In this two-day workshop, students will explore the theories and techniques of larger scale abstract painting and investigate composition using the formal elements and principles of design. Each student will develop their personal expression and find their natural “mark” whole further exploring the process of abstract art. Exercises may include blind contour drawing, spontaneous line drawings, observational painting, and composition investigation. Zona hopes to provide her students with the tools to explore new concepts, develop a creative voice, and build confidence as artists!
This three-week course meets wednesday october 29, november 5, & 12
In this beginner-level course, students will create a 6”x6” stained glass mosaic. Tools, materials, and safety practices in mosaic art will be discussed. A choice of designs as well as all materials and tools are provided, but the student may also bring their own (the design will need to fit a 6x6 substrate). This class is designed to give the student enough information and practice to continue with mosaics on their own. The student will finish their piece in three classes:
Week 1. Introduction to materials and their safe use
Week 2: Transferring the design to a substrate and adhering the pieces
Week 3: Grouting
