Artist Talk with Michel Varisco

Artist Q & A

with Michel Varisco

Sunday, March 24th, 4PM

Michel Varisco has been a working artist for over two decades. While known primarily as a photographer, Varisco redefines the medium by creating photo-based assemblages, and site-specific installations that function in accordance with her still photographs.

In “Just Below the Surface” Varisco takes the seriousness of environmental and personal themes and creates a whimsical experience she calls “magical realism”. “We’re losing our heritage land. In a desperation to communicate the fix we’re in, I just took everybody under water with me; fast-forwarding into a modern-day Atlantis,” explains Varisco.

St. Tammany Art Association presents Spring for Art April 13, 6-9pm

There are few better ways to spring forward than with a celebration of music, art and performing arts, and few better places to celebrate such than historic downtown Covington. Spring for Art is a free festival held in the streets of the city’s historic downtown district. Produced by St. Tammany Art Association, the annual event draws thousands of patrons who come out to enjoy the live music, art demonstrations, performances and dining in 32 Spring for Art locations.

Live music for the event will include Crispin Schroeder Band, A Coastal Gentleman: David Broadbridge, Bobby Ohler and the Harbor Band, Amedee Frederick and JS Full Circle.

Entertainment will include aerial sling with Liz Bragdon of Our Place Studio, Pandorium Belly Dance Company, pottery demonstrations with Vanessa Hock, and glass blowing with Zachary LeBlanc of New Orleans Glassworks and Printmaking Studio. Children will enjoy hands on art making with Ruth Ostarly.

The popular Mix Masters’ Competition also returns, with local bartenders dazzling crowds with their innovative cocktails. Audiences will vote on their favorites, and a new Mix Masters’ Champion will be crowned, with the top mixers taking home cash prizes.

Mardi Gras Kids’ Camp

St Tammany Art Association

Dates: March 6th, 7th, 8th

Time: 9:00am – 4:00pm

Fee: $175.00| $125.00 STAA members

INSTRUCTOR: Rachel Loyacono

Children ages 6 – 12 are invited to join us for Mardi Gras Kids’ Camp, to be held during the school holiday break. Led by acclaimed artist, Rachel Loyacono, children will use individual creativity to create drawings, paintings, 3D and mixed media projects.  Students will be engaged in hands-on projects and class conversations relating to the lesson, games, and even stories that help to ignite their imaginations. Art history is incorporated into each lesson.  The goal of each lesson is to be fun, playful and memorable.

Wednesday, March 6th: Wayne Thiebaud’s Cakes
On this day of creative confections, we will be studying the work of artist Wayne Thiebaud. We will begin by making a cardboard “cake slice” sculpture which we will decorate using the impasto technique to mimic cake icing. We will then make a corresponding cake painting during which students will focus on modeling and shading so that the cakes appear to have 3 dimensional form.

Thursday, March 7th: Gelli printing/ Mask inspired Collages

To begin this project, students will experiment with Gelli plate printing to make patterned paper. Students will use plants as stencils, cut paper stencils, and texture making tools during this process. As the patterned paper is drying, we will learn about and discuss masks throughout many countries and cultures and the artist who were inspired by them such as Picasso and Sandra Silberzweig. Students will use the patterned paper they created to make a mask themed collage.

Friday, March 8th: Henri Rousseau inspired Batiks

Students will learn about the artist Henri Rousseau and will create their own jungle scenes using acrylic and tempera paint. We will then use a batik method with india ink creating a striking black ground and interesting texture. While the batiks are drying, students will create a jungle animal sculpture from air dry clay to accompany their painting.

Yoga in the Arts

Led by Brandy Manguno of YOGA SANGA in Mandeville

Yoga and the arts are wonderfully complementary, intuitive disciples rich in creativity and rooted in self-expression. Each pose often tells a story; asana sequences and kriyas can be perceived as choreographed flows; and the deep experiences many have on the mat can be as evocative of feeling as witnessing a wondrous piece of art.

Painting & Poetry: A Transformational Love Affair

amaury-salas-324504-unsplash.jpg

Discover and discuss the transformational relationship between painting and poetry as the two arts merge.

We will look at the works of the great masters and the poems they inspired in such examples as Bruegel’s “Landscape With the Fall of Icarus” and W.H. Auden’s “Musee des Beaux Arts.”

We will also examine the reverse transformation of poems into paintings, such as William Carlos Williams’ “The Great Figure” in Charles Demuth’s “The Figure 5 Into Gold.”

Examining the marriage of these forms is magic. Just bring yourself – images and poems will be provided.

Class leader is Dr. Susan Blalock, Professor Emerita, University of Alaska, and a resident of Abita.

Donations are accepted, but this event is FREE and open to the public
