Introduction to Impactful Negative Painting Techniques

Single-Session workshop Saturday, June 21st
9:00am - 1:00pm

In this introduction workshop, students take advantage of the nature of acrylic paint and work in multiple layers of transparency and opacity. Students will create a painting from start to finish using a negative painting approach - painting “around” an object to suggest its shape, as opposed to “filling it in!”

This 3 to 4-hour workshop introduces negative painting techniques with demonstrations and mini-exercises to impart basic acrylic painting tips about brushwork, edges, color characteristics, value contrasts and more. As a culmination to the workshop, you will use these tips and techniques to create your own nature-inspired painting!

Students will learn the difference between “positive” and “negative” painting, learn about the color characteristics integral to the technique, conduct transparency tests, and identify fundamental shapes.

In their main project, students will build on their exercises to create a dramatic acrylic painting.

Students will also receive a Workshop Handbook to print out and keep for reference to help you continue your practice and exploration of negative painting at home!
