Introduction to Acrylic Painting

Acrylic Painting through a print-maker's eyes.

Over this 4 week course, students will explore value, color theory, the importance of experimenting, and methods of acrylic painting through an emphasis on process.

Week 1. Process is everything.

“There is no cheating in art. It’s all method.”
—A Very Wise Man (Rob Fairburn)

Today we will talk about sculpting shape with value, and the importance of an under painting as a roadmap. We will make a blue and white value painting of a still life.

Week 2. Value adds value. Color adds flavor.

If a good value painting is a steak dinner, good color is the garlic butter sauce.

Today we will experiment with color and discuss the basics of color theory, and how to use that to make exciting compositions. We will create two still life paintings that explore this idea.

Week 3. Define art...

“Art is why i get up in the morning.”
—Ani Difranco

This week we will discuss “what is art.” Redefining “good art and bad art” as “successful and unsuccessful art,” and why both are ok.

This week will will experiment with abstract art concepts and methods. We will create a cityscape in beautiful downtown Covington.

Week 4. Self portrait. Endless opportunity for learning.

This week we will combine all of the knowledge we have learned so far, painting a self portrait using a method i have built based on layering techniques commonly used in printmaking.
