carolyn’s artist statement

Carolyn is a painter in oils. I began studying painting in the 1980’s when a friend recommended a small studio offering classes. In those classes I became familiar with the work of Henry Hensche of Provincetown, MA. At the time Hensche had travelled to Louisiana to give workshops and eventually he settled in Gray, LA and stayed until the end of his life.
Through Hensche and other followers of his, I learned about the color mass approach to painting. With this study of objects in certain light, the color masses of the light plane, the shade plane and the cast shadow, the subject can be depicted in the atmospheric conditions present. This kind of painting leads to a lifelong study to take what you know to be true through observation and apply it to the canvas. It’s all study, not completion of the artist’s education. I also gravitate to the idea that a painter can develop their own voice with this approach.
My love is still life, “the arrangement of truth”, as Hensche described art. I like to see a common object raised up to fine consideration in oils.

Carolyn has a BA in Visual Art from Southeastern Louisiana University (2012). She is represented by Studio de Chene in Baton Rouge, LA.
