Mardi Gras Kids’ Camp

St Tammany Art Association

Dates: March 6th, 7th, 8th

Time: 9:00am – 4:00pm

Fee: $175.00| $125.00 STAA members

INSTRUCTOR: Rachel Loyacono

Children ages 6 – 12 are invited to join us for Mardi Gras Kids’ Camp, to be held during the school holiday break. Led by acclaimed artist, Rachel Loyacono, children will use individual creativity to create drawings, paintings, 3D and mixed media projects.  Students will be engaged in hands-on projects and class conversations relating to the lesson, games, and even stories that help to ignite their imaginations. Art history is incorporated into each lesson.  The goal of each lesson is to be fun, playful and memorable.

Wednesday, March 6th: Wayne Thiebaud’s Cakes
On this day of creative confections, we will be studying the work of artist Wayne Thiebaud. We will begin by making a cardboard “cake slice” sculpture which we will decorate using the impasto technique to mimic cake icing. We will then make a corresponding cake painting during which students will focus on modeling and shading so that the cakes appear to have 3 dimensional form.

Thursday, March 7th: Gelli printing/ Mask inspired Collages

To begin this project, students will experiment with Gelli plate printing to make patterned paper. Students will use plants as stencils, cut paper stencils, and texture making tools during this process. As the patterned paper is drying, we will learn about and discuss masks throughout many countries and cultures and the artist who were inspired by them such as Picasso and Sandra Silberzweig. Students will use the patterned paper they created to make a mask themed collage.

Friday, March 8th: Henri Rousseau inspired Batiks

Students will learn about the artist Henri Rousseau and will create their own jungle scenes using acrylic and tempera paint. We will then use a batik method with india ink creating a striking black ground and interesting texture. While the batiks are drying, students will create a jungle animal sculpture from air dry clay to accompany their painting.

Holiday Kids' Camp

Children ages 6 – 12 are invited to join us for Holiday Kids’ Camp, to be held during the school holiday break.

Thursday December 27 | Winter Monoprint and Painted Paper Collage

After learning about printmaking and monoprints specifically, we will look at examples by Edgar Degas as well as other artists. Students will experiment with different monoprinting techniques, using different resists and drawing into the paint before printing from a glass plate. When our prints are dry we will use them in a final winter themed collage using painted paper that each student will make at the beginning of the day.

Friday December 28 | Observational Drawing/Cubism Lesson

Students will learn about the history of Cubisim and key artists of the movement like Leger, Picasso and Braque. They will then draw a still life of arranged musical instruments in the style of cubism. They will finish the drawings with chalk pastel.

We will also play drawing games like, “Roll a Braque” or “Roll a Picasso” where the die determines what shapes they must draw in their artwork.

Wednesday January 2nd | Textile Art/ Weaving

Students will learn about textile art and the weaving of Anni Albers as well as other contemporary artists. We will then make a hanging weaving with colored yarn on a cardboard loom.

Thursday January 3rd | Cardboard Cityscape Sculptures

The group will look at the work of artist/designer Mary Blair, who is most famous for her design of “It’s a Small World” in Disney World. From the courtyard we will observe the architecture of Covington’s downtown. After students are thoroughly inspired, they will cut out, paint and embellish cardboard buildings of their own creation. They will then arrange and glue them on a painted cardboard base to complete their sculpture

Friday January 4th | Japanese Woodblock Print style Portraits

Students will look at Japanese woodblock print portraits and artists who were inspired by them such as Mary Cassatt.  Then using a mirror they will closely observe themselves and draw a self portrait. We will finish off the portraits with multiple mediums.

For our second project, students will continue to learn about Japanese art through origami.

Rachel graduated with a BFA in drawing and painting from the University of Southern MS, Hattiesburg. She has taught art with the North Shore Home Education Center in St. Tammany.
