Land and Sea: A Collection of Photographs by Adam Israel Valadez
Opening Saturday, August 17, 2024 from 6 - 9pm

The St. Tammany Art Association is excited to host a solo exhibition of Houston native, Adam Israel Valadez. Land and Sea: A Collection of Photographs opens during Covington’s White Linen Night for Public Art on Saturday, August 17, 2024.

The work eloquently describes the skate and surf culture of the third coast and marries documentary and fine art genres through raw captures of honest humanity in candid films and spontaneous stills. The images and films presented are invitations to forge deeper connections with our environment, embracing the fluidity of motion and the profound harmony between humans and nature.

Valadez’s passion for photography is born from his childhood, where memories were etched on super 8 reels by his grandfather, and family events and holidays were immortalized through the lens of a manual Nikon by his father. These nostalgic influences ignited Valadez’s own creative flame, driving him to capture the overlooked nuances of the skateboarding and surfing culture and its vibrant characters.

The photographs and short films in the exhibit explain the raw intensity and passionate dedication of skateboarders and the intimate relationship between surfers and nature in the coastal landscape. Viewers gain a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the beauty and emotions that define the experiences of skateboarding and surfing.

Michel Varisco: Just Below the Surface

Just Below the Surface

Traveler©MichelVarisco.jpg

The spaces in between Michel Varisco’s work force moments of meditative stillness amidst installations that rhythmically engulf the viewer, placing you “Just Below the Surface”.

As a native New Orleanian, Varisco’s work is centered around the human relationship and interaction with the environment, specifically water, and the effects that one has on the other.

After experiencing the destruction of the failed levees during Hurricane Katrina, much of Varisco’s work has focused on the fact that water not only sustains, but also has the ability to devastate communities and their beloved land.

BearingFruit_Sm_©MichelVarisco.jpg

In “Just Below the Surface” Varisco takes the seriousness of environmental and personal themes and creates a whimsical experience she calls “magical realism”. “We’re losing our heritage land. In a desperation to communicate the fix we’re in, I just took everybody under water with me; fast-forwarding into a modern-day Atlantis,” explains Varisco.

The rhythmic repetition of her work is seamlessly presented in polyptychs and installations to parallel the natural patterns of water. The photographs, silk installments, and assemblage of objects come together to reflect the pack-and-go mindset that is so normalized to those living in an evacuation environment.

Supplies:
Camera - needs to be a digital camera (no film!), SLR is encouraged, but not necessary. Cell phone cameras are not sufficient for this class. Having RAW capability is nice but not essential.

Laptop/tablet – photo editing software is ideal. We will discuss options for Photoshop. iPhoto can be used if Photoshop is not an option. All work will be shared digitally with the exception of the final project.

Digital Storage – an external hard drive, thumb drive, or online storage. Wifi is available.

BRING THESE TOOLS EVERY WEEK!
